I experienced something somewhat similar when backpacking the canyon in October 2001. We took a day hike from Indian Garden to the edge of the Tonto Plateau and, as we sat gazing about, a storm of fog rolled up the gorge. The clouds were confined to below the rim of Granite Gorge and I didn't even see the storm coming from downriver until my buddy spoke up. We watched it roll very swiftly up the gorge and before we knew it it was pouring torrents all around us. It was baffling because the sky above us was, for the most part, cloudless and blue. We ran back to Indian Garden and were completely drenched and laughing by the time we got there.
