Ideas for a Breck kayak festival?

Boaters-please post your ideas / opinion

The Town of Breckenridge is organizing a white water festival for the Breckenridge playpark in late June. Given the design of the park isn't too friendly for a freestyle event, we are looking at holding more of a boating family oriented festival, but still want to make it something a crew of whitewater boaters would enjoy. So far we've come up with ideas for a boater cross, downriver race with portaging, kid-create-a-craft (kids build a boat to float down a hole or two), if it floats paddle it, tubing race... There will be free beer, hopefully music, peraps a mid season kayak swap, whitewater rescue demo's, boat demos...

If you have any ideas on what might work to make this a festival for all paddlers (new to semi-pro), please let us know. We are designing this event to further unite the kayaking community and show that the Breck park can be used for other events than rodeo.

with the low volume, steep nature of the Breck Park, I would look at a head to head downriver sprint through the park along with the boatercross. I think it would be pretty fun to come bombing into some of those drops with two or three other paddlers.

Have a sledgehammer party there the last week of March to break up some of those really steep concrete slopes, cross your fingers and just maybe one of those drops will be usable this season.

If not, the beer, music and other stuff sounds good but leave your boats home...its that bad.

Talk to some of the kayak manufacturer reps, and see if you cant perhaps get a free clinic of somesort. But i also agree on the boatercross. Also, perhaps an event at night, with lights to add some variety? Or barrels of fire like green river WY does!
