I was scouting Soc Em Dog on the Chattooga in SC/GA when I saw an open boater flip above it. He calmly rolled it, eddied out, reset and ran it. Respect.

One great thing about Open boats are that they effectively eliminate the risk of a pin, which is probably the cause of the majority of whitewater deaths. Of course, this is not the reason that I paddle one, as it is simply the style that I prefer, but it is certainly a plus. I am also of the mindset that with the right skill level, just about everything that can be run in a kayak can be run in a canoe (aside from bigger waterfalls). While this seems crazy to some people, look at the stuff that's been run: Niagra Gorge, Raven Fork, etc. Hell, I've paddled the Lower Meadow and NF Blackwater, and I personally know numerous unheard of OC-1ers that are much better than me.

Yeah I really hope so. My work has a conference around that time every year, and I was unable to go last year, but I'm going to do everything I can to make it out this year

I got into rivers via OC-1 and 2 then went to C-1 before I ever Kayaked. Now I do all three as well of row. I enjoy all those modes, but I have a special place in my heart (and pain in my knees) for c-boating.

Interestingly, I think the C-1 roll is a lot simpler and easier than a K-1 roll.
