My dog gets giardia all the time. He likes to drink stagnant water in the mountains instead of moving water. So, go for a hike and drink from a pool of nasty still water.

Diagnosis is pretty much based on symptoms, but a fecal test will probably be performed.

Caveat: New studies are showing that Metronidazole (Flagyl) alone may not completely get rid of giardia from your system. Fenbendazole (Panacur) needs to be used in conjunction with Metronidazole to remove the parasites from the intestinal wall.

Also, your doctor may prescribe Albendazole instead of Metronidazole (fewer side effects).

Still, I wouldn't recommend it.

I'm pretty serious about this. But, perhaps giardia is not the way to go.

I like mescalimick's suggestion of using household plants.

Let's see, there is some Rhubarb in the garden.
Rhubarb------Leaf blade------Fatal. Large amounts of raw or cooked leaves can cause convulsions, coma, followed rapidly by death.
Hmmm. perhaps not. We have a cherry tree.
Wild and cultivated cherries---Twigs, foliage---Fatal. Contains a compound that releases cyanide when eaten. Gasping, excitement and prostration are common symptoms.
I don't think so. Ah, this looks like just the ticket:
Iris------Underground stems------Severe-but not usually serious-digestive upset.
But, perhaps I should some of my own research to see what "not usually serious" means.

Thanks. Keep the ideas coming.

Flagyl did not help me get better, in fact, not only did it not stop the giardia, but my body had a pretty bad reaction to it and I got sicker. I had to go on Intetrix, a drug I will swear by, but have never heard of or seen in the U.S.

Join up, suckas.
