How is Dec for New Zealand?

Thinking of getting tickets now, so I can take advantage of my airmiles finally. Seems every time I try to use them... no go. So this time I called today about heading in the first week in December and United was like... hell yeah, wide open.

Now I just want to make sure that the south island will be good to go at that time...

Any info?

I went two years ago from Mid Nov. through the first week of December. Didn't have any rain when I was there, but all the classic heli runs still had more than enough flow. BTW, the guide book is interesting to read, but lots of rapids change from year to year, so don't count on it for giving you mile by mile rapid descriptions.

December should be good for the South Island. It all depends on what you want to get into. If that includes the heli-access stuff, then you are looking for high pressure conditions (to allow the heli to fly) and relatively low water. Most of the heli runs have short box canyons that can get pretty dicey at high flows, not that the entire run wouldn't be significantly more punchy. If you are looking to hit up the Murchison area, then a little rain would be nice to get the tribs to the Buller running. Either way, both of thise areas are pretty close to eachother and fairly convenient to Christchurch, so I would say go for it. It is the trip of a lifetime.

Hey Marty.. Holley and I went to NZ in December. Heli runs were all good to go. Murchison paddling was on the high side of good, but still good.
