Jensjust is correct as is FlowT. It is a Vietnam reference from what Ben told me, specific to being thrown into very hostile/intense confined areas.
One thing you can bet, is that Ben/Darin/Jesse and all those that are part of their teams for these adventures are real pro's. EJ and I were talking about a month back about kayak b.s. and he said very clearly that there is no one at this moment that he feels is doing what Ben is at this time. Taking the time to study geography in totally foreign/hostile lands, pouring over topo's, and understand what is really happening like Ben. To the extent that it is freaquently not just about kayaking at times and can be more about harsh survival and group strategy.
There are many in our community that are pushing limits of the sport in many ways... and many that are superb paddlers. I just feel that Ben/Jesse are at a level that really isn't matched. Not to mention that they are some of the nicest guys you could imagine, they take their movie on tour to personally share the experience, answer questions, have a beer, and be part of the community. Can't ask for more than that.
To put it in Gary E's words (one not known to shed credit unless very well earned), is that Ben is off the charts of even the hardest paddlers. He's on his own now.
