gunny gorge flows

latest info:

Flow Change
For the past 7 days, releases from Crystal Reservoir
have resulted in
flows in excess of 6,500 cfs through the Black
Canyon (peaking at over
7,500 cfs); flows at Whitewater have peaked at
around 15,000 cfs; no
major property damage has been reported from the
Delta area; and water
from Blue Mesa Reservoir has been evacuated to an
elevation at which the
majority of the expected runoff can safely be

Reclamation's next step is to begin reducing
controlled releases from
the Aspinall Unit. Beginning Sunday, June 1st
releases from the Unit
will begin to decline at the rate of approximately
500 cfs per day
through Friday, June 6th. At which time flows in the
Black Canyon and
Gunnison Gorge should be in the 3,500 cfs to 4,000
cfs range depending
on side-inflows. Flows should remain in this range
through mid to late
July. As always, these releases are subject to
change because of
hydrologic, safety, mechanical, and other possible
factors or
situations. Please contact Dan Crabtree at
970-248-0652 or respond to
this email with any questions regarding this change.

Crystal Dam Access
Also, Reclamation's Curecanti Field Division
announced today that
limited access to Crystal Dam will be provided to
the public today and
Saturday, May 30-31, 2008, for viewing,
photographing, or "feeling" the
releases from the dam's spillway and powerplant.
Public viewing will be
provided between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., on both
days respectively.

Public interested in traveling to Crystal Dam to
view releases should
note that motorized vehicles are currently precluded
from traveling the
full distance to the dam as major construction
repairs to the damaged
roadway have yet to occur. In April 2008, the East
Portal Access Road
suffered extensive damage resulting from a large
boulder and rockslide
falling onto portions of the roadbed.

Until the East Portal Road repairs are completed,
only foot traffic,
bicycles or non-motorized conveyance are allowed
past the rockslide area
with resulting access to the dam. Reclamation will
have personnel on
hand to point out the areas where visitors should
exercise extreme
caution in trekking to the dam. Please note, the
total distance in
traveling from the rockslide area to the dam is a
1.8 miles. At present,
no restroom facilities are open at the dam.

Please contact Donald Phillips at 970-240-6300 with
any questions
regarding access to Crystal Dam.
