Gunnison River Festival Update (postponed till August)

Hey boaters!

With all this snow and it still falling as I am writing this, I am getting very excited about spring run-off and a nice long season. Gunnison is seeing some crazy record-breaking and near record-breaking numbers in terms of snow pack, water content and low elevation (8000') snow pack. The LakeFork, Taylor and GunnisonRivers are going to be ones to travel for this summer.

This is great but has required us to postpone the festival until August 16.

The Gunnison River Festival was originally scheduled for May 24. One of the earlier festivals in Colorado. But due to our high snow and probability of a way above-average run-off, we have decided to postpone the festival to later in the summer.

The festival will now be held on August 16.

There were many valid reasons for moving the festival from a traditional Memorial Day Weekend festival to one much later in the summer. One reason is that Memorial Day Weekend is falling much earlier in May this year because May has 5 weeks in it this year and therefore the probability of the festival falling at the same time as a possible record-breaking high water is quite high.

The other is that GunnisonCounty just spent a bunch of money in re-engineering the drops in the WhitewaterPark. We want to be able to use them at their optimum level (700-1500cfs). Above 2500 cfs they may just flush out, but until we see it we won’t know. Also, if they need a bit of tweeking or move a bit in the high water it will give us a lot of time to make the necessary changes.

In addition to the freestyle comp. The festival will have its most popular events such as the raft race, river parade, race-a-raft foot race, boaterX and the foamy boat race for kids of all ages.

We are very happy about the decision and it is being met with widespread approval from the people, businesses, and agencies involved.

So remember, Gunnison River Festival Aug 16, 2008. If you want to be involved as sponsor, vendor, competitor, participant or volunteer send me a message or email: gosgood(at)gmail.com.

Sounds great. That's cool that they're going to fix the features, they needed it big time. Does anyone know what they plan to do exactly, or have they already done it? Are the features going to be totally re-done or just tweaked? I'm psyched at the possibility of having a good hole in Gunni. If done correctly, you could paddle there long into the summer. If you guys need any imput or help down there, let me know.

we completed modifications to the drops in early November. No guarantees but the goal was to improve performance across a range of flows but the low banks through the park prevent those drops from working at very high flows.

Good deal, glad to hear that the park got some lovin from Harvey and crew. I recall the Gunny Park being pretty damn good back in the summer of 02. This is when there was a nice spot on surfers right of the bottom hole, real good for hitting loops. The people headed to Dos Rios would drive by and sometimes stop to watch us play. Good times...

High hopes for for the fixed features, high water and a great festival! I think August 16 is a great idea. WSC starts classes on Aug 25 so early arrivals for school will have a nice treat. It may turn out to be a rocking end-of-summer blowout. Data shows that the Gunni typiclly has good flows into August. Especially on above average snow years.
