Green River - Labyrinth Canyon
I know this isn't the typical stimulating run that most of you are used to, but just wanted to throw out some afterthoughts. My first trip ever on the Green btw:
I heard from quite a few folks that the mosquitoes were "bad" b/c of high water.. no one mentioned that it was like the gates of mosquito hell were opened and they were invading by the millions in an attempt to suck every drop of blood in the area. I've lived in FL and camped in the swamps there, I've lived in MD and camped in the eastern shore watershed, and combined they don't even hold a tiki torch to the swarms we encountered. It makes you consider putting the groover in your tent.. Seriously, don't even think about camping unless you have a gallon of deet 100.
Other than the mosquitoes, the water was fast and high, which made pulling off somewhat difficult. Tough to spot an opening in the veg, and by the time we did, we were paddling back against the current to get to it. Due to some unforseen issues, we paddled (canoe) the last 32 miles to mineral bottom in about 5.5 hrs, to give you an idea of timing.
Other than that, didn't see many folks out at all. In 3 days, just 1 large canoe group, and a couple of motorized boats playing around for the day.
I learned my lesson though, I'll save the Green for the end of summer and lower water. Still glad I got to finally float something out there though!
