Grand Flows

Anyone know what is up with the swings in flow in the Grand Canyon recently? Daily changes from 10,500 to 17,000. Is that normal? Seems pretty big and way different from historical flows. Is it just lots of AC in phoenix or what?

Looks like standard operating procedure to me. They fluctuate the releases in the grand for power when they release from lake powell. Power demand changes over the course of the day, and thus so do the flows. The peak and trough is a well known phenomena and most experienced GC boatmen have figured out when the pulses hit which section of river. Many figured it out the hard way when they tied up rafts during the spike only to find a beached loaded raft in the morning.

It also means for changing waves and features. A perfect play wave at camp in the afternoon might be washed out in the morning. Get it while its there!

Ordinarily there is a daily fluctuation (and not always within the same ranges).

But the flow regime sometimes is constant. This September and October for instance, it will be a steady 8k cfs for the entire time. That was the case in 2009 also. (Plus whatever comes in from the Paria, LCR, and other side streams, of course.)

Often, the GCPBA and RRFW listservs will republish the Bureau of Reclamation releases describing future flow regimes.
