If you need boats, there is a place in Farmington, NM that rents rafts. They are the San Juan College Outdoor Rental Center. Here is the link to there website. Outdoor Equipment Rental Center They have mostly 14' boats. But they do have a couple 16', 1-17', and 1-16' cat. There number is 505-566-3221. And I December, you will most likely have a choice of any boat that you want.

congrats on your permit. it sounds like you don't have a clue but here it goes: yes you will really want drysuits. no there are no crowds. the air/water temp is cold ass. the rapids are just dandy. no one wants to loan you a boat. take all the hikes you can. good luck and have fun.

Sounds like you need an outfitter. Just got back from a Grand Trip and used these guys for shuttle, boat rental, food, gear, etc. Was on the trip with 3 guys that had about 45 years combined Grand Guiding experience so felt pretty comfortable with their choice of an outfitter. Everything went exceptionally well. I would highly recommend them.

Just returned from the grand. I highly recommend Moenkopi Riverworks: Grand Canyon River Rentals
We have private boats but this was the only way to go IMHO
We flew into Vegas, shuttled to Lee"s, where we were met by moenkopi who had rigged our boats and stayed with us thru the ranger talk. They took our travel bags and stored them while we were on the river. Excellent equipment. Four star meals, waay tooo much and excellent advice--"don't forget the downstream ferry".
The water was cold in August so it won't be warmer in Dec.
The hikes are an important part of the experience.
The night float to Pearce was one of the highlights of the trip.
Moenkopi met us at Pearce with our Vegas clothes, lunch, and after a very short derigging we were on the shuttle back to Vegas.
The trip can be divided into two parts: before Lava and after Lava.
There was a noticeable decrease in angst once we were thru Lava.
It is a life changing experience.
Have fun.
