If you go through MOab, the City Market has Doles Ice- made locally. All the outfitters use it.(Although they get it delivered to their warehouses.) In the summer they come twice a day to keep it in stock. I can't remember the price, but it is pretty reasonable. It is in Big rectangular blocks. Crystal clear, solid frozen water.
I asked them about that crap ice you find elsewhere, and its made by freezing water on metal sheets and scraping it off and compacting it into crap blocks. Thats why it looks like it has air "injected". A piss poor excuse for ice.
I work in the Mojave desert a lot, and we field biologists consider ourselves connoisseurs of primo Ice, and I can tell you Moab's is the best. There is good ice at Mike's liquor in Joshua tree, and the downtown liquor store in Blythe makes their own ice and it is also solid.
