Golden to stop charging for canyon rescues

The city of Golden decided to stop billing people for rescues in the canyon. City to stop charging for canyon rescues

This is good news for kayakers because in the old days, whether you wanted it or not, if the Golden swiftwater rescue team encountered you on the river and interacted with your group then you were presented with a bill.

Sometimes when you have a swimmer or a pinned boat in the canyon a tourist who is driving by will call 911 as soon as they get out of the canyon and have cell phone coverage. The swiftwater team responds to those calls and when they are finished taking over your rescue scene they take names and start sending out bills. Thankfully, they will no longer be doing this.

This is great news. All search and rescue groups should do this. In Pitkin county rescues are never billed due to the views of the local sheriff. They want to save lives at all costs. The worst possible outcome of an accident is the death of someone. This could happen if the group was reluctant to call for help if they could be charged tens of thousands of dollars for a rescue.

On the flip side, local rescue groups eat these costs unless the victim has done their part to help in reinbursement from the state. There is a program where $.25 is added to all hunting, fishing, wildlife area stamps and is applied to rescues. Local rescue groups are payed for their costs out of this fund. If you do risky things in our outdoors, please be responsible and get this coverage. There is even a type of hiking stamp sold in outdoors stores for non-sportsmen. It could save you a costly fee and reinburses search and rescue groups for their time and costs.
