Golden Playpark info wanted

I am coming down to CO in mid January and was wondering if the Playpark is open in the winter (weather permitting)? Does the playpark freeze over in the winter? Do people boat there year round? I read somewhere that 60cfs is about minimum flow for the park. Is it worthwile at those levels? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

If the park is open, is there a shop in the metro area that rents gear?

In Alaska, we dont get many winter outdoor boating opportunities, so i thought while i was down in CO, i might as well see if i can get in some paddling.

winter in Golden

Sorry to say that while the play park is a blast in the spring there really isn't enough flow in the winter to make it worth getting wet. If you are able to get up to Glenwood Springs, Shoshone can be paddled all year and there is a shop in GS that rents all the gear.

Golden Park

The WW park in Golden is awesome, but limited to mostly warmer weather paddling only (March-October). It's pretty shallow and 60 cfs might not be the type of boating most people would consider fun (you might be dragging from slide to slide). You might be able to roll in a few spots or maybe even get the boat vertical in a couple of places, but that's about it. Most likely it's frozen between some of the drops right now.

The WW park in downtown Denver is running right now around 150 cfs, low but good to go. The racers have been over there all winter running gates, and others have been over there to throw around a little bit.

Confluence Kayaks in Denver rents gear (bring your own drytop- we can provide the rest). 303-433-3676. shopinfo@confluencekayaks.com

Other than that: try the Gunnison WW park or go for a paddle on the Colorado near Glenwood Springs.
