Boater friends -
It has been a great season for GOALS
(Get Outside And Learn Something)- a Colorado charity who focuses solely on getting kids into wilderness river canyons for multi-day outdoor education experiences.
A middle school educator myself who has spent the past 13 summers guiding commercial river trips in Colorado, Utah, and Alaska, I created GOALS after one too many returns from summer break listening to the adolescents in my classroom discuss the video game levels they'd conquered during the time off rather than the peaks they'd climbed or river they'd explored.
Now completing our 4th year of programming, GOALS is proud to have worked with students from 4th to 12th grade in 2012 on wilderness river trips ranging from 3-6 days in length. Our groups have come to us from several locations in Colorado, as well as Oregon and Baltimore, and the impacts of our programs are truly impacting their lives
long after they reach the take-out. It goes without saying that I'm very proud of GOALS and appreciate the ability to teach kids valuable lessons- about both academic curricular topics and more importantly about teamwork, camaraderie, self-confidence
and other important life lessons- in our canyon classrooms.
We want more people to know about GOALS and what we're doing. As a result, we're hosting a fun, informal happy-hour type of an event on Thursday, September 20th at Forest Room 5 in Denver - 6pm. More details are on the Facebook page at Facebook.com/Goals4Youth. Please join us, and invite your local friends to do the same- through email, by sharing this post, or by sending them the event invite on Facebook. It's important and valuable work that we're doing- not only for the adolescents on the river, but also for the places we all hold near and dear that will need a new generation willing to stand up and fight for their preservation long after we're done paddling through them.
