General questions about the Greys in Wyoming, levels, etc

May be in Jackson area in August. Does it typically run into August? Sounds like the class 4 section around Snaggletooth may go pretty low and may be runnable in August. Does the class 3 above that still run when it's low?

Can anyone compare the difficulty of the Greys to eastern rivers like the Gauley, New, upper Yough, etc?

Its small water, so nothing like the New. Its not as technical as the Upper Yough and the undercut factor is not in play like it is on the Gauley. Your issue is going to be having enough water as we're already on a downward trend.

Should be enough water to make some technical moves and its a beautiful canyon so its probably worth one run but the Snake should have some play features in.

I've scouted it several times at medium levels and there was always too much wood in it for a cataraft.

I'm headed down to run the Bear River this weekend, I'll check out the wood situation in Snaggletooth on the way and let you know what it looks like.

I've run it many times at various levels. It's always worth doing but, the "lower run" on Greys with the rapids takes about 30 minutes at the most. The run has a creeky feel at low water and Snaggletooth is easily scouted from the road. I have always boat scouted the other 5-6 rapids that are above Snaggletooth but, I haven't been yet this year so I don't know about the status of wood. Very worth running laps on Grey's when the adjacent snake river run is in full-on carnival mode. If you are traveling anywhere near southern Idaho in the next few weeks a run on Murtaugh or the Black Canyon of the Bear is not to be missed. Gros Ventre river, Bitch creek, and the Teton rivers have good boating too but, may be low in August. My advice; surf lunch-counter in the early mornings/late evenings and run Greys during the day.
