GC Trip Report: Part 1 - Getting on The Grand

Wow, how do you even start a trip report for the Grand Canyon, let alone finish one. This is especially true for a trip that almost didnít happen, due to the government shutdown, in October 2013. Launching 3 days late, the last day we would have been allowed to, this trip literally came down to hours. It would not have happened without those who protested at Lees Ferry, which convinced the NPS to allow late launches and the AZ government to reopen the park -- Speaking for everyone in our group, we cannot thank you enough.

Glad for you guys; you stuck it out just long enough. My group had an Oct 3rd launch date. We got to Marble Lodge on the 2nd to join the growing mass of "raftugees" and to wait and see what would happen. The Marble Lodge owner was really supportive and allowed an ever larger number of people to camp in the dirt. We spent the days hiking and visiting places like Antelope Canyon. We spent the nights getting a little bit rowdier with each night as tensions were released and everyone went through their own stages of grief. Spirits rose as AZ tried to pay to open the park, but unlike 1995's shutdown, the NPS refused to allow this solution. Sad that it took 13 days of hurting people before the NPS relented. People have said it before, but it probably cost the NPS 10 times the amount of money to keep us off our river as it would have to honor our contract and let us launch. New lauch date is now late September 2015, not October. Can you guess the reason ?

Looking forward to hearing the rest of your story.
