Fort Collins CO

My wife and I have been talking about trying to head back to her home town to be close to family and that town is Fort Collins. I raft but mostly with a frame and oars in order to go fishing. We do some river camping too but not any real whitewater stuff. What is it like around Fort Collins? What rivers are good float options that offer day/multi day options with camping and water that is on the mellow side, class II+ maybe mellow III. I own a 13ft AIRE with a simple bench frame. Is this a good raft for that area?

My brother and SIL just moved away from "Ft. Fun".
They really enjoyed the Poudre in their 13' NRS.

Lots of Poudre threads in this forum.

The poudre can get a little skinny for oars at highwater, and the fishing in the canyon leaves a little to be desired. but it does offer some close access. IMHO the whitewater far exceeds the fishing. Just up the road in WY is the North Platte. There are 60+ miles of great fishing and a class II - III+ whitewater run. multiday trips can easily be strung together up there.

Huh? That's when it's best. Beats CC. Not really a beginner river though, but manageable. You should be comfortable rowing class IV if you want to fully maximize your Poudre experience. I wouldn't enjoy being stuck on Filter Plant(the local class II/III- run) with tubers all summer. A lot of people do their mellow float trip/over nighters on the Upper Colorado but IMO you'd be crazy to leave a river as sweet as the Poudre for I-70....and Pumphouse. I can't comment on the fishing, but judging from the amount of fly-fishing I see going could be worse

Poudre is a gem. And ft Collins is a badass town.

Sounds like what you want is the A,B,C section below Flaming Gorge....only half a days drive.

Damnit! I meant low water. That's what I get for trying to post at work.

And agreed, Fort Collins rocks.

I learned to row and paddle on the Poudre, I think its a great river. Little did I know that rowing my Udisco on the upper and lower sections of the Poudre would be great training for all the rivers to come. I now live in Arizona. I miss being able to get a Bridges run in on an afternoon after work.

Filter is a great after work fishing stretch. North platte offers close multi day for any level boater (multiple put in / take out options). The lower encampment is a great fishing stretch in the spring. Pump house is close and offers day runs or multi day. Miricle mile and gray reef are nice fishing destination. Yampa offers a nice weekend trip. Lots of options.

The poudre will be your after work river though.
