I was just talking to Chris Baer about this same thing last week. Here is more good info.
Where is Baer ?: How to travel with a kayak internationally,
I think the main thing kayakers need to learn and accept is traveling with a kayak is horrifically expensive. Trying to save money shouldn't be the plan, getting the boat on the plane is.
$200 each way for an international trip should be expected with a creek boat. Tight time schedules just won't work. You need to be willing to pay, have plenty of time (if you have enough time employees go on breaks, shifts end and new people come the the counter etc)or try to find a boat in country (which I did in Chile and Norway and saved a ton of $$). The e-mail stating they will take the boat is clutch.
Another thing to consider is why you would even bring the boat back home. Sell it in country. You could probably find a buyer before you even leave for the trip.
