First Descent: Middle Yuba Box Canyons
Hey everybody,
Myself, Macy Burnham, Culley Thomas, and Chris Tulley just completed a descent of the lower two box canyons of the Middle Yuba (#2 and #3). We are pretty sure it's a first descent, but you never know. Ron Thompson or Lindgren and co. may have done it years ago without telling anyone. We would be surprised though, because the urge to tell people about it would have been quite strong.
I'll post a full trip report within the next day or two, but before I go calling it a first D, I thought I check first.
You all are probably curious so I'll kill the suspense... There was driving in the snow, there was hiking many miles, there was good flow, there was ridiculous gradient in Box #2, there was unportageable stuff, there were mega-portages, there were big drops, there were inescapable canyons, there were bears, there was outstanding whitewater.
I've never been on a run like it...truly magical place. Incredible forces of nature created those canyons and it was humbling and empowering to be in there.
