Eugene, OR paddling and people

I'm looking at making a move to Eugene, OR sometime in the next year and was just wondering about the city and the paddling scene. Right now I'm stuck in the flatlands of Indiana and am just a lowly Class 2 paddler, hoping to move up to Class 3 next year. Just interested in finding out some about the scene, and just the city in general. Maybe make some contacts with some people who could show me around some on a visit and answer some questions about the area. Thanks!

just do, its awesome. eugene has lots of opportunities for paddling, especially good playboating and easy river running. there are lots of paddling clubs and people to meet up with. Check into these sites for specific info;

i grew up in roseburg and went to school in corvallis and that area is awesome for paddling but be forwarned the willamette valley is very grey and dreary during the winter but thats why you can paddle so much.

eugene is also a really cool city but be forwarned again it is very left leaning almost extreme is some respects and that doesn't jive with everyone.

Don't forget about PDX kayaker - some of the Portland online groups stretch down the valley.

Mixed in with Eugene's left-wing is the right-wing (i.e. bible colleges & Christian broadcasting) - there's just no one in the middle...

Also cost of living is probably a bit higher than Indiana. All told though, I really miss living there. Natural play spots right in town, lots of runs on the McKenzie which runs pretty much year round, the Willamette has great runs, Lake Creek is epic when it goes, and that's all within and hour of town. is offline   Reply With Quote

no matter left or right - I find the paddlers in Oregon to be most accepting and nurturing anywhere! get a drysuit you can boat all year. sure beats indiana anyday.

for a slightly less socialist state (less taxes) - try washington.

Thanks for the replies. Everything I've heard about Eugene has been really good, and I know that kayakers are the coolest people in the world. I don't really lean left or right, but usually get along with most people. I'm hoping to get out there in the spring to explore some.

I think I saw more epic kayaking opportunities while hiking down a desert canyon in Utah 2 weeks ago than we have in Indiana.

For sure check out my wife and I are pretty active in it and we paddle with the Eugene crew on a regular basis... only about 2 hours from Pdx to Eugene.

Join the forums on both pdx and eugene and you can find a crew to paddle with... if you make it up to the Portland area, give me a shout and we'll hit the water.
