Encampment

Surely this is in the Bible or New Testament......but
What is the number to call to find out when the road to encampment is open.
Anyone have the local info on the road
Do the folks there run shuttle??
Thank you

Encampment

The Steamboat crew has got a good fix on when the road will open. Anyone from Routt County. When will the road open?

I'd go when the water is juicing it makes the flatwater manageable, and the rapids superb. We went a couple of years ago at above recommended flows and it was great.

I would think that it will be a long time this year before you can get in there. There are acouple of ways in but at this point, no go. The folks at Lazy Acres campground used to have a good handle on what was going on and would run shuttle, but they sold out, and I don't know if the new owners are any help. The forest service is usually the best bet to call for the road status to get in to Hog Park

road

Just looking at the snow here in Steamboat I would say that you've got about a month until that road would be open. Remember we had record snowfall this winter around here and it is still coming down every few days.

phone number to call

mark at the trading post in riverside/encammpment is the man who has his finger on the pulse. he always has the latest as the local sheriff and deputies along with the county road crew are always in there gettin coffee his number is 307-327-5720 or 5927. i read the guy who said it'd be a month yet but i bet a few boys from around here will have broken trail by the first or second week of june. as long as you can get to hog park res than your in there. instead of putting in at commisary park you can put in at the tail water of hog park res and ride that to the confluence with the encampment which is around a mile or less. you can also hike it which is a pretty mello hike. call mark he'll let you know.

Just called the Trading Post - they told me you can't get to Hog Park yet, but figured I'd bump this anyway. If any of the Steamboat or Wyoming crew get the good word on the road, please pass it along.

Primitive Skills

Maybe this is a weird suggestion— don't hesitate to give me shit.

But would it be possible to drive up to the snowbanks and then sled the 'yaks in with snowshoes? Seems like you could stow the webs under the flotation bags, or buy the cheapo plastic sort and stash them— come back when the road can be driven to pick them up (and do another run).

When I was sampling lakes up in the Winds at ice-out, we'd have to cross 10-12 miles of thawing snowpack with a pulk sled. The trick was to start about 3 am and boogie on the freeze. You can't party the night before, alas.

Seems like the sort of thing that'd appeal to the sort of kayakers interested in running the Encampment at high water.

Talked to Mark up there today. He said the road into Hog park is good to go as of a few days ago. I was thinking about a sunday run this weekend, anyone else game?
