Encampment

We are planning to run the Encampment sometime between May 28 thru June 1st. Does anyone know if the road will be open at this time or if it is already open. Also, anyone know how to check the level (website)? I called the campground http://www.wyomingcarboncounty.com/lazy.htm and they no longer run shuttle for people and the forest service does not anticipate the road being clear of any snow until early June. Do you think we could make it to the put in at the end of May?

Thanks!

Don't know about the state of the road, etc. For the flow, try the USGS website for the gage near the town:

<http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nwis/uv?06625000>

I just checked it: 422 cfs. There's another gage upstream near Hog Park.

Good luck— Chip

Thanks for the link. The flows are down because it has been cold up there and they had some snow recently. The flow should come back up soon.

I talked with the Forest Service and they said the road is not clear of snow yet. However, there is no gate so you can try to get back to the put in if you want. We are going at the end of May and if it is not totally clear, I might chance it.

I'll be over that way this weekend probably, i'll try to run up and see what the snow is like. Last year it was open from the blackhall mountain way pretty early-someone plowed the last few drifts about mid may I think. theres a timber sale in the area, so it may be the same case again. The shuttle is a little longer that way, but its a nicer drive. I might be able to help out with shuttle. Have 2 jeeps with winches if its only "kinda open".

Nice! Have you done an overnight on this run? Are there good camp sites?

I've never run it. Way over my head. I have hiked it a few times though. Plenty of good camping spots all the way through.

I don't know if it's worth a heavy boat to camp anywhere in there. The run goes by pretty quick for 15 miles, especially if the water is medium or above.

Also, the lower down you go, the greater the potential of having a million mosquitos as camping companions. I would recommend camping off the road in a number of pullouts about 3/4 of the way to the put in.
