East Fork Virgin info

Hanging out in Kanab this winter looking for some good boating. The East Fork Virgin from Mount Carmel Junction to Rockville seems like it could be a fun run. Anybody been down there? I'm wondering whats a good level and if there is any big stuff in Parunweap canyon.

EFV

I hiked the first half of the EFV last Feb. It is an amazing place. Down to the park boundry would be class one execpt for a tree laden 10 ft water fall that would probably be a portage-(Maybe sketchy with significant water). At what is the park boundry(Powell plaque) the rest of the canyon is off limits. This is where the "Escape route begins. The escape route include a 4.5 mile, route finding hike that probably includes about 1200-1500 vertical hike via checkerboard mesa. I do not know what is down stream of the Powell Plaque. I think it opens up and would be more class 1-2. I've inquire with the park service about the rest of Parnuweap canyon and pretty much just got "illeagal" and "no trespassing". Best I can tell there is no way to scout up from the take out with out a serious hike or trespassing over private property.

If there is water NF Virgin is way more tangible, tempoweap is fun and the bloomington gourge is a fun class 3-4 play run over 2000 cfs.

Thats what i know

why the off limits? they even shut down hikers from going in there, there's no nasty hazards or anything is there? no massive waterfalls.....weird.

I've known a couple groups to run it. They had access via another friend who's good buddies with the owner of the apple orchard property accessing it from the Rockville side. Sounded like it was decent boating, but lots of access issues.

For other info on stuff in the area my dad operates a basic website with some run info. The contact on there will get you him and he'll have the most up to date stuff on the EF, or access issues on the N. fork.

Thanks for the info guys. Sounds like I need to take a trip to the takeout and talk to the orchard folks.
