Yeah, I live in Empire & shoot whitewater, I'm a shill for royal photo... says the guy from boulder with 12 posts.
Ok, I read the reviews of A&M, and I'll be honest I haven't dealt with them in probably 3 years but I bought my elan7, eos 3, 10d, 20d, a stack of lenses, and a few flashes from them & NEVER had a problem, but they may have been bought out by another company since then, not sure.
I deal with tri-state on a regular basis (bought my 30, 40, 50 and all recent lenses from them), still do, and wil continue doing so, never had a problem & they have treated me well and I have always recieved exactly what I ordered quickly.
Smell whatever you want, I'm here trying to explain to folks that if you deal with a little NY douche salesman for a couple seconds you can save yourself a decent chunk of money, you just have to be firm about what you want.
12 posts and from Boulder, man, I'm just a terrible newb I guess I must wait until I have 400+ posts on a kayak/raft forum to have a past/opinion with camera gear and companies.
I'll agree that online is the way to go but if you spend an extra tiny bit of money with the reputable places you:
:don't deal with douchebaggery
:save a ton over store bought (Mike's Camera comes to mind)
:have great follow up support
I've been buying online electronic/camera/etc for more than a decade and you my friend, represent the 3+ sigma group for being lucky with shady outfits. More power to you but the experiences of hundreds of reviewers speak for themselves.
Dang ... thanks for all the information! Looks like I have some reading to do. Most of what I have heard is the Nikon D40 with 2 lenses from B&H will fit what I am looking to do on and off the water. I got a watershed bag which is the plan for carrying.

Thanks again!
I don't know if it has been posted yet but these are a couple of my favorite sites:

I think you need to relax.
Plenty relaxed bud (just got off the river!), just don't like being referred to as a shill, kindof a douch bag term to call someone who's just trying to save people $$ on photo gear.
(as for the boulder thing, well, no comment) My point with the comment on posts is that I've been around here for a while, have found cameras for a number of people on this forum, and even more people on here have my leftover cameras or lenses that I sell each year. I've been part of this community & wouldn't steer people toward something negative.
Also, if you look at Mike's, you'll se they're selling at the same price as B&H on some items (50d= same $$). Why buy not buy from your local retailer then? I don't live in Boulder, but they SEEM like a good place? (if they're a crappy dealer, by all means, I've only been there once) Unless I'm saving a strong chunk of $$ I'd just keep my money local.
btw, if it hasn't been mentioned yet, DPreview is the best review site I have used, great cross referencing & new/ out of production comparisons.

You'll have to excuse the shill comment then, red flags generally go up when I see people advocating for sites resellerratings has listed as bait and switch operations.
Post count - generally seems indicative of drinking, boredom, and/or computer related jobs, I never correlate knowledge and thread post counts.
Mike's - not a fraudulent place but generally much more pricey and the staff seems to know less than all but the least informed customer. I'm surprised they match B&H. Maybe it is a case similar to the place you haven't been at in years. Mike's used to routinely charge MSRP and come in at 10+ percent more than the good online guys and shrug when you asked them why.
I like dpreview for the in depth reviews but the forum guys tend to be obsessed with trivial differences in resolution and dynamic range and seem to spend more time pixel peeping than taking pictures, I stopped posting over there years ago. These days I find Fredmiranda and Luminous Landscape to be my sources for better info and tips.
Re Boulder - after 20+ years in Philadelphia I'm quite content to live in Boulder. It has good running, biking, kayaking, park trails, climbing, etc. all within a short distance. I've also made a good few friends from all walks of life around here. Other than the college kids it isn't even really that liberal. it is the most homogenous, upper middle class place I've been. I think most of the negative attitude it gets from the rest of the state comes from people buying that its inhabitants are what they are pretending to be. Deep down it is more conservative than places that don't pretend to be otherwise. When you factor in the short drives to places, safety, views, and tech jobs I find it hard to beat. This week I've - run up Longs Peak, taken a motorcycle ride over RMNP, jogged the skyline, and plan on soloing over Fair Glacier next week as well as running some whitewater in Clear Creek. Compared to dodging bums, traffic, and garbage in Philly I'm in my own little slice of heaven. It's only because Colorado is so nice everywhere east of I-25 that people even have the time or energy to get partisan about what part they like/don't like (although I'd kill for a professorship in Durango.)
So I'm an office guy with an alchohol problem... SWEET!!!
hehe.
400 posts in 6 years, not exactly heavy duty postaholic bud.
Hope people can glean SOME usefull information from this thread!
You said it, not me Actually I thought the and/or was implied and no, 400 in 6 years is a tiny post count, my comment was general and not pointed at you.
Hey WWPR and others.. I just got a D60 with a couple of lenses and am wondering what to get as far as a pelican. I was just going to get one to fit the bigger lens while attached to the body.
I am kind of worried about chaging lenses in an outside environment. Any thoughts? Is it ok to change as long as your careful if so I will probably get a bigger pelican.
Sorry to thread jack but I realy like the D60 although I haven't used a 10th of the functions..
Thanks

Biggest question is what's your biggest lens? A peli 1400 will hold a body with say a 75-300 is, but won't hold the bigger L zooms (f/4 70-200 or the 2.. I would say that's the minimum, I can't remember what the next one is that holds a grip (I don't shoot without one anymore) and a bigger lens though.
I'm not too picky about changing lenses outdoors, but that's where I shoot & I don't look at it as being an option. I also sell my cameras after a year no matter what, so I'm not worried aobut the long haul. I tend to need to clean my lenses & sensor more than most though, so I would say avoid it if you can, but you're going to shoot what you need to shoot, so be careful.
edit, what the he**'s with the smiley above? two point eight is some smiley code?

You definitely have to be careful changes lenses outside. Cleaning the sensor can be a pain in the ass, so keeping dust and crap outta the body will make your life easier. Don't swap lenses in a dust storm.
