I Vote for the DD it play's, down rivers and creeks. You don't have to fuck with three paddles of different weights.

I don't think there's much of an issue with needing to use a different Woody for different styles of boating. My Freakstyle is awesome for playboating and riverrunning and it's worked great for the little creeking I've done, too. I think there are different weights for the people who are only competitively playboating or for the hard-core creekers who need a slightly sturdier paddle. Other than that, I think any of the three paddles will work great no matter where you take it.

Another thing about the Woody is the foam-core blades. If you pick one up when you're out of the water, it does feel heavy. But what's really important is when you're paddling with one. Because of the bouyant foam-core blades, the paddle feels much lighter in the water. Try one before you judge it as being too-heavy.

Ok, ok I get it. You like the paddles, hell I like the paddle. As I stated above it has a good feel. I just felt the DD had a lighter feel to it and seemed somehow more responsive. The one thing I would like is for someone to bring a variety of Woody's to our pool sessions and let us demo them in the pool. Anyone want to support the PPWC and let us see the different models? I do have a DD and probably wont switch now but I would like to try the 3 different models.

If you want to try some Woody paddles, I would contact Matti, the sales rep. Phone: 970-531-2203 Email:mtnmatti@woodycustompaddles.com, also, his username on MountainBuzz is mtnmatti.

I've got the Werner Powerhouse and love it. I paddled with a Werner WW Rec paddle for 4 years (50+ days each) and it still runs the shit with me from time to time. I like the mild bend that it has more than the heavy bend of the Woodys or ATs, but I think that's personal preference and you will get used to anything you paddle. The downside to AT is that I have personally witnessed 4 of them breaking at OBJ. True the paddlers placed them in their lap and dropped, but i've never seen any other brand paddle break there. Price is definitely a serious issue with the Woody - no matter how good they are, I've never met someone who had one and didn't get it for free or heavily discounted. I do agree that the foam core is sweet.

Please keep in mind with the Woody that you get what you pay for. Every paddle is hand made...and custom made. There is an extensive amount of labor that goes into the manufacturing of each paddle. The materials in the paddle are also not cheap.

While these things do contribute to a higher purchase price, they also ensure superior quality and dependability. If you buy one Woody paddle for $430 it will last you for much longer than two $215 paddles (or two $300 paddles for that matter).

True Dat. My Woody has already outlived my last two paddles, though they were cheap ones, I admit. It will outlive any other paddle and pay for itself twice over, at least.

Personally, I don't have the experience with these paddles to weigh in on the debate, but I will say I've been shopping new paddles myself lately.... and if price is the critical factor here, there's not a huge slide between the $430-$450 Woody, and the $425 DD (unless you're going the straight shaft route??)??

I did run across straight shaft DD's for the mid-$200's (I think at NOC?), but only up to 197 cm.... and there *is* a bent-shaft DD out there on the web at $240-ish.... but they've only got it in the 191 cm variety-- for whatever that info's worth?

(disclaimer: I know you guys are going to say, "support your local paddle shop" instead, but we don't really have a 'local' shop where I am-- the one that *is* here sucks so badly most the folks I know are loathe to spend their $$ there-- so I have to rely on the internet instead. sorry 'bout that!)
