Desolation Canyon Info Needed

I got some great info from past threads, but had a few more questions.

My permit is the 1st week of July 09. We have 5-8 kids age 6-12.

-Should we rent the cabins at Sand Wash to avoid bugs the night we camp there.
-How bad are the Bugs in early July.
-Can I get a mini-van with a trailer to Sand Wash from Ducheune.
-While I have 20+ years rafting experience would it be insane to bring an outdoor savy person with minimal experience and have him row his own boat with kids.
-What great tips do you have dealing with kids on this trip?

Thanks all.

deso bugs

in july the bugs will be out in full force, most likely. we did it last year with a couple of boys in the group. they were both 6ish, bug spray and bug nets are must haves for then. the trip is awesome and as long as the kids are comfortable it is totally worth it. definately rent the screen cabins if you are going to be camping at sand wash! there is a lot of flat to learn how to row before any rough water. if he doesn't catch on you could always run both boats through the bigger ones.

screen cabins - yes (unless you want to get eaten by bugs)
Bugs - bad enough that my wife won't even stay in the cabins
mini van/trailer - probably (unless there has been some washout since last year)
Newbies - last year we had some complete newbies rowing rented rafts. (no children however) they did fine for the most part. Kids would up the ante in a pin/flip/missed eddy situation. would probably consider having the kids in a boat w/some experienced folk. While most of the river is pretty easy there are some rapids that would require some caution.

Tips - ? too young for pbr, maybe nyquil. Sunscreen, bug juice, a fishing pole, lots of benadryl lotion!

Have fun we may see you there! 7/6 launch.
