Costa Rica Rivers

I just recently moved from Vail, CO to the Guanacaste region of Costa Rica. Does anyone have any good stories about trips to CR and any recommendations for rivers to run, particularly in the NW portion of the country?

I went down there this November with Ben S. from AMP

If you are looking for great boating I think that most is within 2 or 3 hours of Turrialba in the central mountains. I did not get to to up to the northwest part of the country but I do have some good info on some remote rivers north of Turrialba. If you want I can send you info, just let me know. My email is

Mescalmick just took a trip down there before Christmas - when he sees the thread, I'm sure he'll give you some beta.

Guanacaste is the dry region of Costa Rica, as you will soon find out. There are not many rivers up there, and I have not heard of any whitewater there. However, there is some good stuff near Quepos and farther south (Rio Naranja III-V, Rio Savegre III-IV, and the Rio General IV). Otherwise, there is all the stuff on the Caribbean side, near Tubbialba (Rio Reventzon, Rio Pacuare, Rio Orosi etc...)

The Genral is a great multi-day run. Naranja is nice IV- short run. The Savegre is supposed to be nice, with a multi-day option. The other stuff near Turrialba is a no brainer, its all awesome.
Good Luck

Thanks for the replies! Guanacaste is a very dry portion of the country, but with all the volcanoes around the region and the rainy season, I was hoping that someone had heard of some creeking in this area. I am definitely planning on trips to the other side of the country and down to the Quepos area as soon as my boats arrive and I get some time off from work. Thanks everyone.
