Conflunce is Running

Yo. Just thought I would let everyone know that Confluence looks sweet right now. The water is nasty, but the play is probably the best yet in Denver this year. If I had my cast off I would be out there. I think its high enough for loops in the top ledge hole.

I took this vid about an hour ago. It'll take a minute to load (2.7 megs). You definitely wont be smacking ends on any concrete today.

We were there Sunday and the flow was at about 200, and basically warm for April standards. At 400, the wave gets nice at the second to last hole. It's definetly confluence season, a bunch of kids were jumping in and swimming the drops in shorts. :P

Flow was 150 at confluence last Sunday, and Denver Water still had the boards in at the top blocking lots of flow--the effective flow through the kayak ladder was more like 100.

It was barely worthwhile if you just want to get your boat wet, try your new playboat, or practice ferries. But, it is a nice scene with kids playing, dogs, and onlookers.

Flow should be 300+ today.

I've asked Denver Water to take those boards out. They say some time this week.......

not that this is going to stop me...

but it is still worth mentioning. Apparently the Gates Rubber Factory on Broadway spilled large amounts of TCE, a toxic degreaser, onto their property while the site was still active. According to tests by the new owners - developers planning on building condos - there are finding TCE in a wide plume throughout the area. That would include the banks of the S. Platte. This stuff is nasty and causes all of the usual cancerous side-effects. If you add that to the landfills upriver, I would find as many body plugs as possible.

Just to clarify, when I said it was running and looked good it was Saturday AM with a shit load of rain water coming down. I am sure by Saturday afternoon and sunday that it was much not worth it.

It's funny, but in other states I've paddled people love to boat in the rain because everything flash floods. Here, most people avoid it and miss the mini runoff.

Confluence is reccomended with a shower immediatly after...and for those without gag reflexes.

Water is nasty, but at the right levels, Confluence has the best concentration of good play in the state.

Join up, suckas.
