Colorado Rookie

I am wanting to get into kayaking but not sure were to start. I played around last year on an inflatable, a Tomcat. It was fun but I want a hard shell. I have a kayak that I take out on the lake but nothing to take down the river. What is a good boat to start out with, where is a good place to pick up a used boat. Everything that I have found localy is for larger boaters. I'm right at 150 after eating icecream all winter. I want to be able to run From Texas Creek to Parkdale and the Royal Gorge one day, just not sure where to start.

colorado texas creek through the gorge is a great day trip. check out cks in bv or salida for cheaper boats and get into the river. play holes are great places to meet people and learn skills from better people.
have fun learning. it can get a little frustrating sometime but keep to it. you sound like a you got the right ideas.

For learning purposes, I would start with what the Manf. call a river runner or creek boat.

They are fairly easy to learn in and provide lots of volume. Check out Boatertalk and your local Kayak supply store. Most sell their demo boats once a year. At some sort of gear swap usually in the Fall.

Sierra South has a boat barn and they list stuff online, but give them a call and they may have what you are looking for.

Craigslist is always a decent place as well but is easier if they are local sellers to you.

PDX kayaker has a Boat Bazaar too. These are mostly local to Portland Or.

That is my other suggestion take a couple classes. You will learn quicker, and be a safer boater. And you can network with some other boaters at the same skill level so you have some people to hit the river with.

CKS is doing demo day at our pool session on Sunday. Our pool is on the south west side so its only about 30 miles from you.
