Camping on RUBY?

Doing my fist trip on ruby, over july 4th with two other boats, and wondering if we will have any problems finding a camp spot. Thanks for any suggestions.

Here is the issue on Ruby/Horsethief....... Everybody knows that the best camping is at Blackrocks. The rapid is pretty long with beautiful cliff alternating with beautiful alcoves along the river left side. River right is taken by the railroad. So there is intense competition for those limited spots. The register at the Loma put in explicitly states that all sites are first come first serve but it iimplies that you will be getting the the site you sign up for. As an example, we often do this stretch as a Wed-Sun trip. If we arrive at Blackrocks Wed evening and the site we signed up for is occupied we will then bump to the next available/desireable site. Things stay low occupancy till Fri eve and then begin to fill up. By early Sat all good sites are taken and yet invariably someone floats in late Sat and is pissed that the site they signed up for is occupied. This conflict will ultimately lead to the government settting up a permit system if we boaters don't play nicely together. Best to stop above Blackrocks if you are not arriving early. There are good spots above in Horsethief before the train drops into the canyon at Salt Creek. Mee canyon is a great spot, too, with lots of hiking. After Blackrocks things get tougher. One trip when eveerything was full at BR we camped on a pretty large island towards the lower right side of the rapid. At that level there was even a fun kayak around the right side of the island and good cliff jumping into the main channel. Have a great trip and remember that all other boaters are our friends. As an alternative to setting your sites only on Black Rocks, our family has found the Cottonwood site on river left to be very nice--although not very good for kids to play at the water's edge. There is plenty of room for several groups to spread out and not be right on top of one another. The 'sign up' at the put in for different camp sites just gives you an idea of how many other parties are on the river ahead of you--it definitely doesn't "reserve" a site for your exclusive use, even if you sign up for it. It's a beautiful stretch of river that is very popular so you should expect plenty of competition for campsites over the holiday. Enjoy your trip and don't be discouraged--just arrive very early into camp!
