camera cases

So I'm looking into getting a camera and am having trouble finding a pelican case that will fit the cameras that I'm looking at but also fit in my boat (the pelican cases are not tall enough) does anyone have any experience with any other cases or keeping a camera in a watershed bag with lots of padding? thanks

why are you trying to keep your disposable camera dry?

Take a look a the X-treme protection cases by S-3. They are a lot less expensive than the peli's are seem to be just as durable (mine has been down a lot of IV/V strapped to my raft).

I think it was about $65 for a T6500 which is about 6.25" h x 12" l x 9" w inside, a similar pelican costs 2-3x. I keep a canon 20D with tripod QR plate mounted, a tamron 28-75 f/2.8, a canon 10-22, and a cannon 70-200 f/4 with lens hood, a CF reader and a spare battery in the case with no problems. If you have a xD series camera or keep the spare battery grip mounted to the camera it still should fit - I have a Gr-80tp (extended grip with built in folding tripod) that adds 1 3/8" to the camera vertically and it fits, albeit snugly, with it on.

If you tell us what camera/size you are looking at we can probably help better.

As a bonus S-3 is based in Ft. Collins so you are supporting a local business by buying from them.

I'm looking for a case that is 6Lx5Wx4H, the pelican case 1150 is only 3.6 high and the camera is 3.7. the camera is a nikon D40 Nikon USA: D40 Kit the problem is I'm not sure if I can fit a case much bigger than that behind my seat, or do others keep them somewhere else?

Tom,

I have a Canon XT, which happens to have the exact same dimensions as its Nikon counterpart. I use the Pelican 1200. It's still a little tight on height (the foam gets compressed a little bit), but it seals. It fits behind the seat in a Jefe just fine. A little more precision is required pulling it in and out than with the 1150, but it's worked fine for me.

Watershed Bag passes the test for me. I keep it on my lap. It's a little awkward at first but I got used to it pretty quickly. I know a lot of people who do the same.

tom i have seen people who use a small watershed with a camera, pin kit and first aid kit in there and strap it to the runner on the bottom of the boat. then when they get out to scout/ set safety they just take the whole bag. everything you need at the drop of a hat.
i think just leaving it on your lap seems a bit troublesome if you ended up swimming or needing to get out in a hurry. get it done before the NC trip.

Thanks guys for the help. I just picked up a watershed bag off nrs, they are having a sale today only 20% off all watershed bags then a different item the next day for 20% off and so on for 20 days.
Best moment of last night: jace trying to role a c-1 with a paddle, that was some funny shit.
