BV playpark update

I have been getting a ton of questions about how the Buena Vista park is now that the 3 new spots are in. With the water up to 1700 I have now seen them and paddled them all “on the way up”.

Unfortunately mother nature has not been kind to us up here in Buena Vista.

The 1st spot or the “bread and butter” hole is not there. It changed over the winter and even with a fix in there it is way different. You can still front surf it at over 1500 -1600 cfs but the pile left with the change. Now it is more of a front surf wave and below 1400 or so you can’t even get in a good front surf.

The 2nd and 3rd “new” spots are washed out. They washed out at about 1000 cfs. Before 1000 cfs they were to shallow to do anything but flat spin. Both looked very promising before run off – but with water in the ditch they washed out before they were deep enough.

Finally the 4th spot is better, still kinda like last year, and violent. Lots of cartwheels are possible but at 1700 I was still hitting the bottom with boat and paddle while trying to loop.

I support BV and this project - just about more than anyone and a many people have put in a ton of time on this. The area around the river with the trail and all cannot even be compared to what used to be down there.

I just posted to let people know what is going on up here. The expectation was for one of the best parks anywhere and people think it is here right now. With some fix-it projects in the fall this park will no doubt get better – but for this year old Mother Nature threw us a big curve up here in Buena Vista.

I hate to say it but I have been doin the drive down to Salida for play lately. This is the first time in 3 years that I made that trip.

Will this affect any of the classes during paddlefest?, I wonder.

I would not think so - the area for teaching is much better in that section of river now. The old bread and butter hole is a wave now and fun to surf. There are new big eddies along most of the section. Like I said above this section is much improved.

JV, thanks for the update. I will be up this weekend to begin the assessment to get in there in the fall and make it work right. The good news is that at 700cfs and below everything was working so the flow we will have most of the summer the park will be in.

Many factors have led to BV being the most challenging project (from a whitewater performance standpoint) I have been involved in. Rest assured that no one wants it to work worse than I do and I will be all over it until it does. Mike

I have no doubt that you guys will work to make the area the best possible - do doubt.

From My understanding the middle 2 are designed for a lower flow than the 2000 current and at lower they were fun. I am just a bit bummed to see the upper hole change as all holes do. Man the old hole was fun!

I also just got out of the river and the upper hole is gettin a pile and fun to surf. The entire run is fun, lots of eddies, plenty of current, and the bottom hole #4 was full, i did not hit bottom today. I am interested to see what the paddlefest brings and what people can do in this hole. I think that it is the best of the 4.

As far as paddlefest. The ark is at 2000 here in BV - pine creek and the numbers are great, the fractions will be full, browns is sweet and storm door will be as good as it gets. Clear Creek came in today and for the super huckers Lake Creek will be at in the area of 1000. Pleanty of boatin to be done. I plan on boatin until my arms will not work.

The down town area of BV will be full and it looks like paddlefest will grow again this year. I am so stoked to have such a great weekend here in BV.

I dont want to come off the wrong way - the playpark is still fun but for this one year I think the best hole in chaffee will be in old saliver.
