Big T flows go up tonight

And, yet more news from me. Sorry for such an intrusion onto the site today! This is from my Big Thompson River e-mail list. It is not really a happy story and my condolences to the family in Nebraska:

Tonight, we will bump up releases to the Big Thompson River from Olympus Dam. We will ramp releases up from the current 125 cfs to about 475 cfs. Ramping up will occur in three stages.

Earlier this afternoon, we bumped releases up to 300 cfs. At 5:00 p.m. this evening, we bumped releases up another 35 cfs or so to around 335 cfs. Late tonight/tomorrow morning at 1 a.m. we will bump releases to the full 475 cfs--about a 140 cfs increase.

The reason for this sudden change in releases from Olympus Dam is to accommodate a Larimer County investigation of a possible drowning at Flatiron Reservoir. Colorado-Big Thompson operations typical of this time of year have us diverting water via tunnel and canal at Lake Estes through the southern power generation arm of the project, which includes Flatiron Powerplant and Reservoir. We will continue to run the higher releases down the river until the investigation at Flatiron concludes. When that happens, we can start running the full amount back through the power section of the project.

At this time, I do not know how long we will run the higher releases down the river. I will send another message when I have an update.

Please feel free to call my cell phone this weekend if you have questions at (970) 215-9545. I'll be in the office a little longer today, too, if you need to contact me here.

Have a good weekend,

Kara Lamb

Thanks for the heads-up, Kara! Our thoughts are with the family, but I'm definitely heading up there in the morning.
