Big South wood report

We ran the Big South from the source on Thursday and Friday. The level seemed to be a nice medium high – all the in between rapids were filled in and the big ones were juicy. There is wood in Fantasy flight – in the bottom drop. It’s big and just below the surface but plainly visible. Meltdown is a different story. It looks great at first glance and I was ready to run it before someone in our group pointed out the base of a tree moving up and down in the right eddy at the base of the big drop. I paddled over there and checked it out. It certainly seems like the wood sticks out into the base of the drop – hence all the moving around the base was doing in the eddy. I think the wood is probably pretty deep and most likely 95% of the time it wouldn’t be in play. However, if you really went deep (they call it meltdown for a reason) and connect with it down there you could very likely drown. Needless to say, none of us ran the rapid. The good news is that Cool World is clean (was wood in there earlier this year) and so is prime time, double trouble, and slideaways. Double trouble looked especially mean but slidaways went well. There are the usual pieces of wood in the boogie water although I can’t describe where or if they are new or not. Be heads up and take a close look at meltdown this year.
