Sounds like you need a road trip to check out the many good options, if possible staying with locals. Spend a couple weeks looking in the multi-state area and I'll bet an inviting opportunity will present itself. You'll surely want to find out how the towns feel to you. Most of our lives travel very non-linear paths, and there's no substitute for face-to-face experience.

+1 on Chattanooga over Asheville. There's a lot of good outdoor adventure stuff happening in the 'noog!

Related question:
What are the rivers like in the Southeast and how do they compare with CO and UT rivers for kayaking, rafting (16' oar rig), and overnights?

I hail from the Southeast (Charlotte, NC), and grew up going on field trip style commercial rafting trips throughout the NC/WV area. I was young and didn't think much about where the rivers were located and what sort of private boating or kayaking there was nearby.

It was not until I was in CO that I got into kayaking, and more so these days, rowing a raft. I now have a small child and find myself thinking more and more about moving back close to family. I know there are plenty of options, but I am not sure if a 16' boat with oars is too big, if there are whitewater overnight options, family overnight options, etc. Any information or comparisons would be helpful.
