Best Place For Kayak Instruction?

Where would be the best place to take kayak instruction in Denver area? I've seen a place called Renaissance Adventure Guides has 5 and 3 day courses. Any body have any feedback on this or other good places to learn?

A few of us took our first lessons (three day course) with Rocky Mountain Outdoor Center (RMOC) near Buena Vista. We camped, and had a great time. It's also near CKS so you can go to your new favorite toy store after you're done.

Renaissance is a great option for kayak instruction. Their course are geared at giving you the necessary skills to be able to go out and paddle class II+ on your own including things that are often overlooked in beginner kayaking lessons; how to use/catch a throwbag, how to self rescue, river trip logistics and so forth.

After you've learned some basics in Denver, worth a trip to Aspen Kayak Academy.

Thanks GlennD (I'm one of the Confluence instructors).

The 3 biggest schools in the Denver area that I know of are RA Guides, Confluence Kayaks, and the Colorado Whitewater Club. There are others in BV, Aspen, and Fort Collins (and probably others but I'm not familiar with them).

RA Guides is very unique in their 3/5 day "teach you to get on the water" program. They can take you from never being in a boat before to feeling confident going on your own trip. Most people I know who have gone with them have done the multi-day program (which is awesome from what I hear).

Confluence kayaks really concentrates on 1 and 2 day lessons (one lesson on flat water, one on moving water) or learn to roll sessions. They can teach more advanced lessons (really well in fact), but you have to schedule a private lesson for it as they don't have regularly scheduled classes other than day 1 and 2 and roll classes.

Colorado Whitewater has a very wide variety of classes but only offers them very early in the season, with the big Training Camp weekend being the culmination of their program in mid May. They work to give everyone in the lessons a "community" of beginners to go boating with through club membership.

Honestly though, any American Canoe Association certified instructor can give you a good (and insured) lesson.

Team Colorado Whitewater Racing is doing a summer program for kayaking, and we're usually around the Boulder/Denver/Golden areas. We mainly are a competitive slalom club but also do beginner whitewater lessons. There's two weeks left in the summer program with some real kick-ass ACA certified coaches, with programs going into fall and winter and pretty much all throughout the year. We can supply you with boats and gear and the best part? It's only $80 a week, five days a week, 4 hours a day of supervised high performance training. The program can be found here:

You can either contact the email on the site or go through me directly and I'll put you into contact with a coach.

Good luck on your search!
