I did not end up having shoulder surgery after a bad dislocation but I did go see this doc -Khemarin R. Seng, M.D. at Mapleton Hill Ortho. I can tell you he was pretty good about giving me plenty of time to heal up & rehab before doing surgery. He'd be worth a consult.

+1 for dr. Seng...he's pretty cool and has helped me with knee issues and is currently trying to help me with an elbow issue.

And the front desk staff at mapleton hill is fantastic.

Dr Ken Duncan, a world class kayaker, has done my left (90 %tear May) and right (November) rotator cuffs last year. I'm 100 % back to normal. He's in Ft Collins at the Orthopedic Center of the Rockies. Good luck and don't take rehab lightly, you only get one chance to get the repaired shoulder back to speed.

Dr Repine did a fine shoulder repair on a friend of mine. You have plenty of good options in boulder - not sure there is a "best"

I'll second the Mapleton Hill Orthopedic group. They really are great and cutting edge. I had shoulder surgery almost a year ago from Dr. Weider. I have had no problems since and am almost back to full strength and starting to paddle again. I debated between Dr. Weider and Dr. Seng, but ulitmately went with Weider because he had been doing shoulder ops longer and I felt like he really understood the demands that paddling puts on your shoulders and wanted to get me back to paddling. But you can't really go wrong with either one. Good luck. Also get a good PT guy, because the surgery is only going to work well and hold up with good PT work.

Bottom line surgery sucks. If you can rehab with physical therapy and avoid surgery you should. If you choose to have surgery pick a surgeon who specializes in shoulders and you should have a good outcome. Alot of shoulds because there are alot of complications in surgery...making it suck...

I had a boney bankhart fracture with a SLAP lesion secondary to an anterior dislocation repaired by Dr. Abbot at Vail Orthopedics last June. Dr. Abbot is renowned in the field and is one of the best shoulder surgeons in the country. He has worked on other kayakers I know all with excelent outcomes. One year later and I don't even think about my shoulder anymore in or out of my boat. I actually wish both shoulders felt as good. I also agree rehab is paramount. I don't know what you're having done but you will probably see your PT at least twice a week for 3 months then once a week for 3 more so pick a one you like. Good luck!
