Sounds about right that you have to cock your wrist forward at the start of the roll to get a climbing angle, but it should only be for the first few degrees of your sweep. As you sweep out, the bend in your wrist should be reduced immensely. So, with proper timing, the discomfort should only be an instant. And as Don pointed out, a climbing angle isn't an absolute necessity if you push the blade up.
Another thought: take this opportunity to work on your offside roll. No bent wrist required.
