Bailey Virgin

OK, not exactly a virgin but I've only been through once at lower water - maybe 200 - 250 cfs (so that doesn't count!). I'm wondering if anyone can give me some info on how much the character of that run changes with more water. It's running at about 550 right now and I would like to know what's going on with it. Does it become a different beast? Anything in particuliar to look out for?

Also, I've seen 3 recent posts on wood issues in Bailey. Is it all easy to avoid?

Thanks in advance for keeping me out of trouble!

I might get flamed here, but I think you'll find that the level of difficulty doesn't jump substantially. The lines are generally the same, although there are bigger holes and the lines through the "big 3" are definitely saucy. But overall, the stuff in between the rapids gets super fun and filled in, plus the paddle out is better. To be safe, get a guide. Sounds like there will be plenty of folks there this weekend, so find a group that is for sure scouting 4 Falls / Max / Deer Creek and give it a go.

no flames here! it's a good time with the same lines. just bigger! still a class IV run with two IV+ and a -V. once past supermax be heads up for a tree that you pass under on the left. below this, maybe 1/4 to 1/2 mile, there is a tree in the main current that you'll want to pass on the right.

I've never been there either and I understand private property is an issue. What's the scoop on getting out and scouting or, my favorite activity, portaging?

The only issue with private property that's been a sore point in the past is folks pissing and shitting around the river-right 4 falls scout /portage. Please make sure you clear your colon before you put on, and discreetly pee into the river if you must. I also try to grab at least 1 piece of trash when I walk the top drop- these folks are good to us by letting us use their property without hassle, so make sure you treat it with great respect.

This is the example we all should be following. I've met the landowner and he is a really nice guy, but he has no obligation to let us scout or portage on his land. He is bothered by people hanging out there too long and by the powerbar wrappers and minicell left there. Let's keep him happy to welcome boaters - most of us would not want to lose the portage option on the first drop, particularly given its propensity to hold wood.
