It happened last year on the Yellowstone river to a guide I work with in the summer. Fortunately noone was killed or seriously injured. It was a fishing trip not a WW trip. The boat was anchored on the bank with a guide and two passengers. Guide noticed a tree start to fall so he grabbed the front passenger and pulled him out of his seat and back into the rowers bay. The tree came to rest right on top of the seat where the man had been sitting. The only injury was a scrape to the man's head. It took quite a bit of wrangling to unpin the boat though and the seat had to be replaced.

A few years ago a man and his son were killed by a falling tree while canoeing on the Bitteroot river.

It's not a real common occurance but its smart to keep your head up and pay atention to your surroundings.

Sip poured for our fallen brothers and sisters.

When I took my first kayak instruction class somewhere around 1995, our instructor told us that there are more recorded deaths on rivers from falling trees than from lightning. That always stuck with me, and no crap, it looks like it does happen.
