Regarding the Big South, the lower half was being run before the upper half was accomplished. The lower at least in the early '80s if not earlier. A large group that I was apart of made the assualt on the upper in the later '80s. Our group of maybe a dozen, which maybe about six of us did a no portage of the upper, might have lost the official title to a rumoured sneak assualt (the day before the gate opened) by Will Gant (?). I've never been able to substantiate that. Our group, including Paul Zirklebach, John Foss, myself, and some others, believed we were accomplishing the FD of the Big Drops in the upper and we were followed in close succession by Team Wave Sport the same day with the same goal in mind. Their video footage was a major part of WS's '87(?) promotional video. It was medium plus volume and a perfect weather day. I remember anxiously scouting Cool World and saying to Zirk, "Paul, I think we can nail this." To which he replied with his typical huge smile, "I do too, ... and I'll go right after you." And so we did. Melt Down was the highlight, though, in my opinion. It was monstours and pretty much on the fringe that day. We were stoked from Cool World, though, and we all survived. Although, I remember Paul and John doctoring somebody at some point. I have pictures somewhere and don't recall what happened or where. At Double Trouble I was scouting and heading up to put on when Ed Lucero (Team WS) came barreling down battling on the fringe of control. The hole at the bottom held him and it proved uninviting. So the rest of both groups walked it that day. DT had already been done previously, so we felt pretty good about it having been an awesome day. Certainly one of the highlights of my life. But, Gant(?) might have the FD anyway.
