I had an incident while wearing gloves a while ago where I went to go grab the loop on an NRS Kilt (no plastic, just webbing) and of course I was totally gassed by the time I went for it (missed about 6 attempts) and couldn't find it. I took a gulp/breath of water and calmed down and found it, emerging totally freaked out. I didn't boat the rest of the day. My solution was to use a large locking carabiner. I find this works better cause it hangs down while underwater, making and even easier find, and it is totally easy to attach (no cord). I wouldn't use this creeking (wood risk) but for ten year old downriver it would work perfect. Suprisingly it doesn't really clang around on the boat and it is perfect for holding up your deck while out of the boat. Maybe this will work better for ya.
