Anyone done any source recon?

How far up can you drive? How deep is the snow? Are people still XC skiing up there?

Are there any wood issues? I know the CU crew got after it in the fall, thanks again for motivating.

I can't do any real hiking yet (foot injury), but would love to scout it out as soon as the road is clear.

I'd also be willing to lend some tools out to the right crew that might want to clear up any issues.

Maria have you checked it out?

The road is clear and good to go all the way to the 4th of July fork. I didn't have time to go further or check for wood. But there sure is water in there. I would be up for a morning recon run on Wednesday...

Cool. You mean up to the fork of fourth of july and hessie? I would guess that there is still snow up on the way to the put in at the shady spots. If not, and we get a couple more peaks like tonight, I may be up for a thursday evening run.

Any update?

Did anyone make it up there yet this week? Trying to do a late afternoon run today and it would be nice to know if there's any new wood.

Baird Morrish hiked it yesterday, but he is not likely to post. Hopefully he doesn't mind his report being plagiarized:

"Just got back from late lunch scouting of the Source. I scouted everything down from 50 yeards above S Turn. . . the snow banks appear to be receeded far enough away from the banks with no overhang and all's clear in second gorge. The only exception here, is a 4" thick tree that's fallen accross 3/4 of stream from river right about 200 yards from takeout right where you go under the two huge tree accross river. It's right under surface of water, and may be lower by tonight, but, is a consideration. If you do run without removing, stay left when going under these trees.

Otherwise, water level's good, I'd say high side of low (dead hiker entrance rocks covered) with things looking pretty filled in. The only section I have not scouted very well is landing of slot down to about 50 yards above S Turn."

Thanks Baird

Chris,

From what I heard (from a guy that scouted yesterday morning) that apparently there is fairly sketchy wood very close to the takeout under some leaning tree's on the right side. Sounded as if it definitely is in play so be sure to keep you eyes open. Another not was that he hadn't check from the slot machine area... Not a ton of help, but you may be the first this year so be sure to TR what you found...

I forgot to mention that no matter how much beta you get, it is all but mandatory to go look for yourself at the whole thing before launching. Wood can shift in an instant. you will not find an eddy right above that brand new piece of wood that nobody told you about.
