Animas?

Me and my crew are heading out to CO in a week or so and wanted to find out about the upper animas run. I know you can do the whole thing in 1 day but I read you can arrange with the train peeps to drop of friends at needleton with camping gear and make a 2 day event and be picked back up. Is this still true. and has any1 camped there.(IE good place to camp with things to do or see)

Also we are IV+ boaters that run the occasional V is the run boat scoutable and are the big 3 rapids noticiable before you run into them. Info greatly appreciated and if we run into you lots of cold beer.

thanks

Good to go

You should be good to go on all concerns. With water levels down, though could be rising with warming weather again, it is all pretty class IVish. It makes for a long one day at low water, but doable. Paddling the Rockwood Box is enjoyable. Get out when the signs warn you. Enjoy your trip. It's a classic run.

have fun

It is a great run. I am still sure that you can have friends meet you up there from the train with camping stuff. I think that it is kinda expensive. This run is know for how cold it is. Make sure if it is really hot out side but still dress warm. The waves will keep splashing you the whole way down and cool you off. The box is great one of the most beautiful canyons. You should know when you are there when you cross a train track bridge. Make sure if you are not going to paddle it that you get out before the bridge. The box is fun but 3/4 of it is mandatory to run. It makes for a great end of the day or for a very bad end of the day. I would recomend running that part with someoe who has run the box before. You should have no problem up above. All the major rapids you can see and there is a train track along the whole run to scout.

Have fun
