We'll run the gorge after the Lochsa is done, pretty much anytime of the year. I've even run it in Jan/Feb which is beautiful. In the summer months (July/Aug) it turns into bumper boats/booze cruise. Lots of knuckleheads and some creeps, and LOTS of commericals. Just get there early to avoid the crowds or weekdays.
If I couldn't get over to the Lochsa, I'd be checking out the gorge more. The Blackfoot is pretty and fun, but boring as far as whitewater goes. I've heard it gets rowdy at around 15K, but really erratic wave trains. 10K it is flushed out with only Roundup having some big fun waves. I actually like the Blackfoot better at lower water, lots of rocks and things to play around on after Roundup.
I am a river, babe - I've got plenty of time, I don't know where I'm going, I'm just following the lines..... - "We are water" by Shaye
