Adam Still Missing - Search Report - 5/28/2006 8:30 pm

Kevin Crochetiere,

I just received calls from "Cutch" and Dr. Andrew Mapes who spent the day looking for Adam. The kayaking group in the incident spent the night prior at Mape's house planning their descent of the creek which was well within their abilities.

Many people have called the kayakers involved in the accident looking for details. A full detail of Adam's disappearance will be relayed directly, from those who were there, soon. Pete, Kate, Cutch, Adam's gear and crew are en-route to the front range now.

Here is what I was told:

1.) Adam is still missing and the details of his difficult swim are hard to describe at this point.

2.) He was last seen swimming into trash-can rapid, at the usual entrance spot, after huge attempts to help him exit the hydraulic below the first drop.

3.) Search and rescue from the greater Durango area, a helicopter and a group of kayakers (who climbed down to every rapid) worked to find Adam for the last two days.

4.) With no other leads, a group of kayakers entered the river above the take out (the exact place I am not sure) and paddled extensively downstream in hopes that the may find him well below the rapids.

5.) A rescue rope used in the entrance drop is open-and-loose somewhere in the run--be careful. Please post if you find this rope.

6.) The continuation of a formal search is unclear at this point.

More details will be posted later this week after some rest for those involved.

location of the rope.

the rope is on river left, just after the pourover that is below pick-up-sticks. the rescue squad didn't seem to think it would be possible to get it out.
