Firing up the Bailey Fest 2012 Stoke!
Bailey Fest '12 will be August 10-12th, 2012. We are adding Friday to event to make it a 3 day weekend. We expect flows to turn on Friday to start the event and have flows all weekend through Sunday.
We will have the same general format this year as last year. Same great camp spot, same fun party, same great river.... Come on down and have a great time.
We have a few new things lined up for this year....
First off, we have 18 sponsors this year and will have lots of great gear to give away for an AW membership drive raffle, and at the supermax showdown foamie race. Boats, paddle, PFD, dry top, 5.10 shoes, dry bags, shirts, kayak session subscriptions and copies of the most recent issue, kayak stackers, and more. We will have tons of gear for you to win. Sign up for AW, enter the supermax showdown foamie race, win gear!
The camp site is getting an upgrade too. Last year we were in the small meadow on the south side of the river. Access was tricky due to a single track entrance road that forced opposing vehicles to back up. The landowner is installing a pedestrian bridge to connect both sides of the meadow. New for this year... we will have camping on the north side of the river with easy access via a new car bridge built last year. Its a much larger spot than last year, so it should accomodate any car camping, RV's or trailers. The south side of the river will host the camp party, movie screen, sound system, supermax showdown foamie race, mobile BBQ vendor rig, and Beer... (aka the Oskar Blues Gnar Bar). This will give us plenty of room to camp, plenty of room to party, and a little space between both so that folks turning in early can be further from the noise of the party. You will be able to easily walk back and forth over the pedestrian bridge now under construction.
Also new this year... Downstream Edge will have a 1/2 day river rescue class saturday morning during bailey fest. Beef up your rescue skills with the top notch crew of Downstream Edge. Contact Downstream Edge for details. Bailey Fest wants to support safe paddler development and river rescue skills are an integral part of that.
Also new this year... Colorado Whitewater will host a Bailey Cruise on Friday of the Fest. CW will also host a Foxton cruise on sunday as in years past. The cruises are intended to be a safe and organized way for folks new to the runs to see them for the first time. To participate in the cruise you need to be a CW member. Its easy and cheap to join CW.
The supermax showdown foamie cross race will be the main event for the saturday night camp party. I'm building a miniature scale model of supermax rapid complete with recirculating water pumps. We will race 4 hand crafted foamies made by a southeastern foamie artist. You can enter the race and get put into a bracket for the race. Races will be in heats of 4 in a final four style bracketed format. Top 4 prizes are Jackson Villain Creekboat, Kokatat Drytop, Werner Paddle, and Kokatat Ronin Pro PFD. No class V foamie experience necessary!
Check out the event website at www.baileyfest.com
for more details, videos from the last few years etc. Still working on the website. Huge thanks to Drew and Rivers Media for helping to host and build the site.
Finally... I want to highlight the importance of American Whitewater. AW is hard at work protecting our rivers. One persons voice is rarely enough to make a difference, but an organization like AW knows how to work with government agencies, water providers, and other stakeholders to help shape future water policy. AW is actively working on projects on the Colorado River, the Dolores River, the Green River and many more. AW needs your support to keep funded and keep up the fight. We will have an AW membership drive at Bailey Fest. Sign up to join or renew. If you renew date isn't at Bailey Fest, they will simply add on another year to your existing membership. Investing in the nominal fee for AW membership is one of the best things you can do to secure long term paddling future in Colorado.
Also... Bailey Fest is non-profit. All event proceeds after costs are covered will be donated to AW. Event entrance fees and supermax showdown fees all go to support the event. By coming to the event and participating in the foamie race, you are helping the event and helping AW... and you also might win some great prizes. Other classic festivals like Gauley Fest and Feather Fest have built up a substantial donation to AW over their years of growth. Bailey Fest intends to follow this tradition and give back to AW to support the folks the keep our rivers flowing.
Bailey Fest 2012!!!! 116 days and counting... Hope to see you there.
