I just got a bent shaft paddle due to some wrist issues. I like the way it feels, but it's messing with my roll. I was taught to align my knuckles on my power hand (right in my case) with the blade on that side. But the comfortable position on the bent shaft seems to put my knuckles in a more neutral position in between the 30 degree feathered blades of my paddle. So I basically have to throttle roll my right hand way further (uncomfortably so) than normal to get good purchase on my roll. Any thoughts...? Thanks.

So as a recent California transplant to the East Coast I hear there's some damn good whitewater around and I'm very excited to see how it stacks up against Sierra snowmelt. I've got a guided raft trip planned for the Upper Gauley in the near future but may try to take one down myself before the season runs out if I feel comfortable with the lines after the first run, or at least check out the lower section. Sadly all my gear is still sitting in a garage in Oakland so I'm wondering if anyone knows of an outfitter who'll rent to a private trip. I don't have any professional credentials but have been guiding privately IV-Vs for years.

I have to give an informative speech and have decided to talk about deadly river features, their history, and proposals or actions taken to make the features more safe.

If anyone knows of any notoriously fatal features I would love to hear about it.
I know of Dimple Rock on the Lower Yough, and Frog Rock on the Ark. I also remember reading somewhere about a rapid that was blown up by some raft guide, but can't remember the name of it.

Please reference journals or articles that have some credibility. Also this is an INFORMATIVE speech so opinions are not needed, just facts.

Wanted to get Utarded this labor day, and after days of nervous gauge watching, Joe's Valley/Lower Seely/Straight/Cottonwood Creek was still holding on to it's meager but still so fun level of 199.95 cfs. I've heard that 350 is the minimum on this, and I've also heard 175 is the low mark. I would have to agree with the 175 mark. I managed to tag a few rocks with my duck but I was surprised how much power the limited flow had.

I met up with Tim, the swimming dutchman, who rallied over from salt lake that morning. He was going to do some bouldering after we boated but was kinda enough to show me down the run. I was absolutely surprised to see ZERO other boaters, which is an absolute travesty considering how fun this run is in a time of whitewater starvation. Where was everyone else? Shoshone? Boring. Waterton? Been there, done that......This is the best off season run Ive ever done and we literally had the creek to ourselves.

The put it is below the first log portage. The upper 1/4 mile to the dam is supposedly fun class III but shallow. The creek starts off with a bang, pouring over several fun drops. There is a mildly tougher one in here somewhere.

The first rapid, Crack House, is a nasty affair. Mank to must make boof into rock on the right, and rock staircase into narrow slot on the left. I walked. Tim ran it with marginal results, although he ended up right side up.

The next drop of note is the Two Tounges, which are two fun holes back to back. Classic.

The climbers parking section is next, with an ugly move between a pourover and a log, followed by a sweet set of rapids.

Hard Left is an ugly drop with the flow going right over some sharks teeth into a swirling eddy. At this flow the only real move was to go into the eddy and then hard peel out back into the mess.

Somewhere in all of the above is a nice slot that is barely a boat width wide, an awesome boof or five, as well as several nice class III's.

Ore Cart is the big boy of the run. Three parts, the first one is an awkward hydraulic pushing into a mid-current rock. It supposedly causes a lot of swims. The next park is an awkward wave train next to a wall, followed by a long a technical weave through some boulders. This last section is the best single drop of the run.

From Ore Cart down there are a couple of fun moves but ultimately the takeout comes too quick. The action still goes on for a little bit afterwards but it supposedly isnt worth the effort, and ditches and obstructions soon appear.

The canyon is really beautiful, and the water is crisp and cold. If this is ever running, drop what youre doing and come do it at least once, you wont regret it!

Hey guys,

I have an NRS e140. There are bubbles that have formed under the material of the raft including the wear pads on the side tubes, the wear pads on the under side of tubes (where the bow and stern angle up), on the strips that cover the joining seams of the tube, and a couple on the floor. Most are on glued areas, but not all. When i say airbubbles, some are less then an inch around but stick up off the raft up to an inch. Almost like its a manufacturing defect (or like a blister when you burn your hand). Its not from inflating the raft as some of the materials the bubbles are on do not hold air (i.e, the wear pad on the side tube). The raft is still under warranty and was originally purchased by someone who did not know a lot about rafts straight from NRS. They said they thought it was suppose to be like this. Any ideas as to what might have caused this? I have not checked with NRS to check into warranty coverage on this. if you have any insight, that would be great. Just wanted to get a better idea.

With that in mind, we were thinking bout getting the kokatat semi dry with latex wrists and the neoprene neck and simply get a latex neck glued on ... is this even a possibility and if so can you tell me how to do this or steer me toward a shop that does it? the only other option is duct tape round the neck ... jk!!!!!

Hi everyone, I have a quick question. I paddle an OC-1, and I grew up paddling for years on class 4/5 whitewater without knowing how to properly roll. Of course, the day eventually came along where I really needed to learn, so I spent an intensive weekend geting it down, and have been working on it ever since (I am now very confident in my roll). So my question is... I have a friend who also paddles an OC-1 who I paddle with on a semi-frequent basis. He is a good deal less advanced then me, and does not have a roll. However, he is still a solid class 4 boater. He asked me to take him down the Lower G the weekend after next; do you all think that this would be a bad idea? I know that he has the skills to handle the river, and he can probably make it down every rapid without problem. However, if he does flip, he is 100% surely swimming. I know every nook and cranny on that river and can inform him of every hazard, but do you all still think that it would be a somehwat bad idea?

For any of you who may be showing up to paddle down south this winter I wanted to extend some information that may help you in your travels. First off I am located in Pucon the creekin capital. I have a full stock of boats, paddles, and gear, from all brands. Flying with boats is getting harder and harder. Secondly I have a sweet 4x4 four door pickup for rent. Unfortunately chile is a destination where a car is mandatory. For any one interested feel Freetown contact me on my email below.
