I'll be heading to Costa Rica in December where we'll have about a week to paddle. I'm planning on sticking around Turrialba for the duration to maximize paddling and minimize traveling. I'm running into some difficulty finding an outfitter who will just rent boats without signing on for a whole guided tour (read: $$$$). Anyone know of someone who rents down there or even a great shuttle driver?

I've been thinking about a new boat and looking through past threads about the 12' catarafts. There are some amazing setups and lots of great ideas about frames, setups, etc. What I haven't found yet was a setup for a 12' cataraft that holds multiple people. I would love to play on the Poudre with my kids. They would be passengers on a frame that is rowed with oars, not paddlers. Can such a boat be setup to do this? If so, how? Thanks!

The other post on this topic has become lame. I was wondering why the original author of the previous post is buying the W80 when the reviews gave it a lesser rating. I uberstand the D10 is bulky and I wouldn't buy it to put in my pfd ( even though I love my powershot), but the panasonic ts1 got a higher rating than the pentax cameras. The only real concern they had was the flash wasn't that great and the ergonomics are a bit to get used to.

I saw a shortened version of this last night at the Banff Film Festival. You crazy kayakers will probably like this, big water that scares this crew must be freaking HUGE. Video always makes water look smaller, even boring, but not this stuff. Check out the zambezi footage and then the white nile, both at high water, rain runoff. I don't think they show either of those sections on this teaser. Too bad it's just a teaser, but probably worth buying as all proceeds go to the Sun Catchers Project, something amazing alone and worth watching this teaser for.

A few friends and I want to do a multi-day wilderness raft trip. We all kayak in class II/III stuff here in NC. About 4 yrs ago we went on a Green River trip (4 days) below Flaming Gorge, taking out before Dinosaur and the permit section. We did this with an oar rig and IK. That was way too much flatwater for us, but a good trip otherwise. I have a paddle raft and feel pretty comfortable on class III+ stuff in that. Our river reading skills are fairly good and we have been paddling for several years but with faimilies, etc. we just don't get to go enough to progress in more difficult rivers. We are all fairly experienced backpack campers.

So in looking for a trip for us Oregon seemed like a good choice because there isn't much within driving distance of here (charlotte, NC) and we are all wanting to go West anyways. It looks like the Rogue would be really great, but we feel like it might be a bit above our current skills. I've checked out all the online resources and am still not sure. We would love to run our own trip (assuming we get a permit) but there is also the "row-your-own" option that several commercial outfitters offer on the rogue, but that is a little costly and we are afraid it may try to "appeal to the masses" a bit more than we would like. Another option I have found would be a multi-day on the Grande Ronde; which looks a little tamer than we had in mind. So here are the questions:
Can we do the rogue on our own or is it too much for our skills?
Is there anything we can do between now and then that would allow us to hit it with confidence? (I was thinking of putting an oar rig on my raft to give us some practive on III/IV stuff around here - oar rigs are not common at all in this part of the country)
Any river that would be better suited to our skills and expectations?

Thanks for any replies!

Because it's never to early to anticipate the white watery fruits of another winter, I give you the Milner Mile:
YouTube - Milner Mile 2009

In April 2009, a big crew of Idaho and Wyoming boys were lucky enough to paddle the Milner Mile of the Snake River during a rare release on the normally dewatered section of river. Known as the "the biggest water in Idaho" rapid contains fast and squirrly water and two beastly river-wide features. Needless to say, we lapped it with gusto because you never know when the Milner will run again. Could be this spring or it could be in a decade. All we need is another big year for the Upper Snake drainage and they'll be forced to blow out the reservoirs; just like last year.

Note, Ryan Casey (green boat, first shot) dialing the crux in a playboat.
